A.R. Penck on his 75th birthday – A look back before the start

Ralf Winkler began his artistic career around 1954 in Dresden. It was not until 1968 that he adopted the pseudonym A.R. Penck, under which he achieved world fame in the 1970s and 1980s. Thanks to the acquisition of Jürgen Schweinebraden's collection (2007), the Städtische Galerie Dresden now has one of the most extensive collections of the artist's early works. Maintaining and researching this collection is one of the focal points of our work. We would like to congratulate the artist on his 75th birthday with a small exhibition of his earliest early work, which was characterised by his engagement with art history.
