The catalogue for the last special exhibition
It was only after the end of the First World War that the Dresden Academy of Art opened its doors to female students. The then 19-year-old Irena Rabinowicz was one of the first three women to enrol in 1919. The young artist experimented with Expressionist and New Objectivity forms of expression, deepened her interest in portrait painting, copied old master paintings and soon made a name for herself in the Dresden art scene with her sensitive portraits. The catalogue traces her further path as an artist and emancipated woman: from the Nazi takeover in 1933, the failed emigration and the new beginning after 1945, when she quickly found a connection to the newly forming artistic circles. Her portraits of artists, musicians, writers, researchers and politicians, created up to the early 1970s, form an interesting cross-section of Dresden society.
