boomerang. Sophia Schama

The transformation of motifs from nature and technology into painterly forms, structures and surfaces is characteristic of Sophia Schama (born 1966 in Sofia). Her canvases open up suggestive pictorial spaces and fascinate through the interplay of illusionistic colour space and flat pictorial surfaces. Her natural and technoid structures and surfaces undergo various metamorphoses when, for example, blades of grass are transformed into brushstrokes and then again into organically proliferating swathes of colour. In other works, these pictorial elements find a motivic counterpart and manifest themselves in series of paintings such as "Natural Wonders", "The Promised Land" or "Urban Jungle". The artist's paintings play with the obvious and are, as it were, reflections on the power and essence of painting. The exhibition and catalogue provide an insight into her painterly work from her diploma (1998) to the present day. Sophia Schama studied at the HfBK Dresden, most recently as a master student of Ralf Kerbach.
