Canoeists in motion, sumo wrestlers and boxing fighters, hunting scenes, horse and dog races are the motifs of Annedore Dietze's paintings. The artist is not fascinated by the sporting practice of the disciplines, but by the uninhibited urge to move of powerful bodies that are exerting themselves. The "Canoeists" created this year are based on razor-sharp sports photographs from magazines from the 1980s, which were taken with short exposure times. Annedore Dietze transforms these photos into long exposures, as it were, by blurring the colours and turning the bodies into carriers of movement. These are condensed into an act of strength that breaks through onto the canvas. At the same time, the canoeists symbolise and reflect the act of painting itself: The effort that such oversized picture formats demand of the artist is also existential.
