Constanze Deutsch draws figuratively. She finds inspiration in the world around her - among friends and family, in the newspaper or on the radio. Her figures are always taken from life and yet seem removed from the everyday world. The fantastical hybrid creatures of earlier works have now given way to realistically drawn figures, preceded by nude studies. Her most recent works are characterised by a precise anatomy and the physical resemblance of the people portrayed. Through her clear strokes and the painterly reworking of her sheets with spray cans, felt-tip pens, brushes and bitumen, the artist lends the figures a statuesque appearance. The exhibition provided an insight into Constanze Deutsch's artistic work over the past few years. In the course of her masterclass with Lutz Dammbeck at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, she progressed from intimate small-format sheets to large-format works in which she fills the pictorial space with monumental-looking individual figures and ornamental drawing fragments.
