Brigitte Bretschneider was born in 1925. As the daughter of a master upholsterer and decorator in Meissen, she was familiar with working with textiles from an early age. from 1941 to 1944, she also attended the Dresden Master School for German Crafts in the Department of Textile Arts and Crafts, where she was able to perfect her talents. After an interruption due to the war, she was only able to continue her studies in 1947 at the newly opened Academy of Arts and Crafts. At the end of the 1940s, she felt obliged to join her parents' business and learnt the trade. She passed her master's examination as a decorator and upholsterer in 1962.
We are delighted that Brigitte Bretschneider decided to donate 19 appliqué embroideries - covering the period from 1946 to 2015 - to the Städtische Galerie this year. With this exhibition, we are presenting her generous donation to the public.
