Johannes Makolies uses found objects with used, patinated surfaces in his works. By reworking, combining or arranging them, he gives them a pictorial quality that is fuelled by the energy of the past. The revitalisation goes hand in hand with a reinterpretation of the objects, which take on a new form in space. His works - whether trashy or elaborately refined - appear balanced and coherent. In their dimensions and material aesthetics, they sometimes suggest a technical or architectural purpose. In this way, the artist succeeds in marking and occupying spaces almost imperceptibly.
