With the support of public and private sponsors, the Städtische Galerie Dresden was able to acquire an extensive collection of works by A.R. Penck (Ralf Winkler) from the estate of Penck's childhood friend and former gallery owner Jürgen Schweinebraden in autumn 2007. The collection includes paintings, objects and assemblages, watercolours and drawings, overpaintings, prints and works from the circle of the "Lücke" group of artists, in whose creation A.R. Penck was involved. The majority of the collection dates from A.R. Penck's time in Dresden, from his artistic beginnings in the 1950s until his departure from the GDR in August 1980. The new acquisition is now being presented to the public in a coherent form in an initial overview. The exhibition shows a broad spectrum of often experimental works from the artist's early work from the 1950s to the end of the 1970s.
