Dresden was the venue for the GDR's major art exhibitions. The last exhibition of this kind - the Xth Art Exhibition of the GDR - took place from 3 October 1987 to 3 April 1988, when there was still no sign of the end of the GDR. More than a million visitors came to see this show.
30 years after the political change, the Städtische Galerie Dresden is undertaking the experiment of once again providing an insight into this cosmos of images by means of a small selection of paintings. By offering the opportunity to re-visit these works of art, we would like to enter into dialogue with our visitors - both about the motifs of the artworks presented, the artistic means and the question of whether and, if so, to what extent various messages and interpretations of the artworks have retained their relevance to this day.
