Britta Jonas (born 1972) is this year's winner of the DREWAG Prize for Contemporary Art. In her sculptures and installations, she incorporates various cultural influences ranging from Erzgebirge folk art to Japanese Nô theatre. Using materials such as wood and rattan, the artist creates figurative images and composes them into complex spatial installations. Her motifs develop exciting interrelationships and address current social developments in a humorous and enigmatic way. In the award-winning exhibition, Britta Jonas presents a cross-section of her artistic work from 2002 to 2008. Visitors to the exhibition rooms can look forward to expansive wall installations, imaginative woven figures and animated films. Her latest work, the "Papagoyen" group of figures, lends the title and the exhibition an air of mystery. Here, the artist takes up an old concept of shooting birds at shooting festivals. The term "papagoy" was used to describe the target in the shape of a bird, which consisted of skilfully sawn and painted wooden parts. Based on this idea, Britta Jonas creates exotic hybrid creatures whose enigmatic appearance stimulates the viewer's imagination.
