Even during her studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, Christine Schlegel sought alternative forms of expression beyond ideological constraints. As such, she belongs to a generation of East German artists whose work evolved outside official doctrines – idiosyncratic and deeply personal. Since then, she has consistently developed her own distinctive visual language, working across nearly all artistic disciplines. The special exhibition features paintings, drawings, overpaintings, collages, artist’s books, and films.

Christine Schlegel was already looking for alternative forms of expression beyond ideological guidelines during her studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. She thus belongs to that generation of East German artists whose work unfolded outside of official dogmas - unconventional and deeply personal. Since then, she has consistently developed her own unmistakable visual language. She works in almost all artistic genres. Paintings, drawings, overpaintings, collages, artist's books and films can be seen in the special exhibition.

Christine Schlegel invents stage-like scenes in various media, which she plays with fantasy creatures. She often follows her own experiences and moods, so that some works appear very intimate - as if they were taken from the artist's diary. In other works, she reveals herself as a critical observer of the present with a penchant for absurd humour. She likes to comment astutely on current events in the titles of her works. The exhibition presents works from the 1970s to the present day.

Christine Schlegel studied painting and graphic art at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1973 to 1978. she moved to East Berlin in 1984. Two years later she travelled to West Berlin via Amsterdam. She has lived and worked in Dresden-Hosterwitz since 2001.

Note: A film and a painting by Schlegel are on display until 31 August at the Albertinum, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, in the exhibition "Aus der Reihe tanzen. Women Action Artists in the GDR".
