Juan Miguel Restrepo Valdes, born in Colombia in 1978, utilises motifs and construction principles of old master painting to develop modern pictorial worlds. His paintings are characterised by an experimental approach to space and are rarely limited to the basic principle of the rectangle on a wall: With irregular shapes, they point beyond their format, have extensions that can be moved at will, contain three-dimensional objects or are parts of installations and object still lifes. The result is a fascinating visual world that challenges and - sometimes humorously - redefines our understanding of the panel painting.
