Abrasion of things. Painting by Markus Tepe on the "changing wall"

Markus Tepe captures landscape impressions in searching and open gestures. His light, floating paintings appear almost graphic. And yet his paintings are powerful and determined in their expression. Markus Tepe experienced his approach to nature and the details of nature as a process of letting go, in which what he saw took on a life of its own and dissolved into an almost non-representational image. The artist often drew outdoors, but he was also able to draw vastness and energy from within.

"My favourite thing," says Markus Tepe, "would be to hurl my picture surface like a boomerang into the expanse of space or landscape. It should take on a higher energy potential in the throw, absorb the space, store time on the way and, when it comes back to me, bring the abrasion of things with it. Enriched and transformed. When everything calms down again, I step back - I pass on my image, this boomerang."

On our "changing wall" we present paintings by Markus Tepe. Together with a group of drawings, they were donated to our museum by the artist's family in 2022 and have enriched our collection ever since.

Markus Tepe (Dinklage 1971-2021 Dresden) studied fine art at the Kunstakademie Münster from 1994 to 1998 before moving to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 1999. Here he studied under Max Uhlig and Ulrike Grossarth, from 2003 to 2005 as Grossarth's master student. From 2006 to 2021 he was a lecturer for free painting and drawing, including at the European Art Academy in Trier. He lived and worked in Dresden. Shortly after his 50th birthday, he succumbed to a serious illness.
