With the artist Christine Schlegel (born 1950 in Crossen), the Städtische Galerie Dresden is focussing on the works of a bustling, versatile and powerful artist. Her oeuvre encompasses a wide range of materials and genres.

Even during her studies at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, Christine Schlegel sought alternative forms of expression beyond ideological constraints. As such, she belongs to a generation of East German artists whose work evolved outside official doctrines – idiosyncratic and deeply personal. Since then, she has consistently developed her own distinctive visual language, working across nearly all artistic disciplines. The special exhibition features paintings, drawings, overpaintings, collages, artist’s books, and films.

Across these diverse media, Christine Schlegel stages theatrical scenes populated by fantastical creatures. Often, her work draws onpersonal experiences and emotional states, giving some pieces anintimate quality – as if they had emerged from the pages of her diary. In other works, she appears as a sharp observer of contemporary life, with a flair for absurd humor. Her artwork titles often deliver witty and insightful commentary on current events. The exhibition spans works from the 1970s to the present day.

Christine Schlegel studied painting and graphic arts at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts from 1973 to 1978. In 1984, she moved to East Berlin. Two years later, she emigrated to West Berlin via Amsterdam. Since 2001, she has lived and worked in Dresden-Hosterwitz.

Note: A film and a painting by Schlegel can be seen until 31 August at the Albertinum, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, in the exhibition »Aus der Reihe tanzen. Aktionskünstlerinnen in der DDR«.
